Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-awaited Netflix series, Hiramandi, will premiere on May 1 after a 14-year wait. Show, Produced Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a long-held vision for the filmmaker, was conceived over a decade ago. At the trailer launch of HiramandiSet in Delhi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is revealed to have conceptualized the series after Moin Baig conceptualized it 14 years ago. HiramandiNetflix India’s VP of content Monica Shergill said, “He (Bhansali) had the story for 14 years. He wanted to make this show, it lives with these characters for so long.”

Monica Shergill elaborated on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s commitment to the project and shared that the filmmaker was determined to find the right medium and format to capture Heeramandi’s “immersive and powerful” narrative.

“Somewhere he always felt that he had to have the right medium and the right length of the story. It just wasn’t contained in the film form. It’s such an immersive world, it’s such a powerful story. He wanted to do it the most. The perfect way. So I think it’s literally It was a match made in heaven,” she added.

At the film’s announcement event in Mumbai, Sanjay Leela Bhansali said that Moin Baig came to him with the idea 14 years ago but he couldn’t do it. As quoted by TOI, Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “I have to thank Moin Baig who came up with this idea 14 years ago. But I didn’t return it, I came in Devdas and then I came in Bajirao Mastani and Moin told me please give it back. Give me back my script.” I’ve done 10 movies in 30 years. I’ve done 3 movies in the last few years and now have 8 episodes to do, it’s like, ‘What did you give me?’ Doing a show like Heeramandi is very demanding, it’s very difficult. You have to be very alert because there are so many tracks.”

Heeramandi: Diamond Bazaar, set against the backdrop of British India, explores the complex dynamics of Mallikajan’s workplace as she navigates the challenges posed by the return of her late daughter Faridan (Sonakshi Sinha). Conceived by Moeen Baig and produced by Bhansali Productions and Prerna Singh, the series stars Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmeen Segal and Sanjeeda Shaikh, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman and Taha Shah. Hiramandi It will premiere on May 1.
