Soon after the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus HiramandiA section of social media started pointing out several similarities between the Netflix series and Srijit Mukherjee’s 2015 Bengali film, Rajkahini, which faced the same plot. In a special chat with News18Rituparna Sengupta, who headlined royal story, reacted to the comparison and called the two storylines very similar. She said, “I have seen many people making comparisons between Hiramandi and Rajkahini and the similarities are very clear. The stories are almost the same. The background of revolution and freedom struggle is similar in both. Those who found similarities saw Rajkahini and remembered what we did in the film.”
“Rajkahi gave rise to regional cinema in a big way. This rise was significant enough to challenge other films as well. when Gangubai Kathiawadi was made, I could see some shots like a royal story. In Alia (Bhatt) I saw some of my posture. Rajkahini certainly inspired many other films when it comes to the subject of brothel life. It can be treated as research material. This is definitely an example for a series like Heeramandi,” she added.
Talking about her aspiration to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali one day, the actress said, “I was missing myself in Heeramandi. I was wondering how great it would be if Bhansali cast me in a role. I can only hope that he is mine. Will watch and invite me to be a part of his films.”
Talking about her review of the show, the actress said, “I have seen most of the episodes of Heeramandi. Bhansali’s work is spectacular. It makes your eyes wide open. The costumes, dialogues, production values are magnificent and on a different level. Overall, he is one of the most respected directors.
