But did you know that Richa and Sanjay Leela Bhansali had a heated argument during the song? In conversation with India Today, the filmmaker spoke candidly about the incident. Sanjay Leela Bhansali said he was “a little upset” when Richa couldn’t express herself. “It was a special moment,” he said. But He was not happy (Her performance did not take off). She was trying, but I wasn’t getting what I wanted. After a point, I got a little restless. I said, ‘You’ve rehearsed it, but it’s still not falling into place, you’re not in the right frame of mind’. I got a bit angry and she got upset too. So she ate in front of me with a bit of anger. (She stood in front of the camera, upset).”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali She added, “The anger on her face was very special. That moment was a result of what I said to her and what she said to me. But it was captured during the recording of the song. In all the songs I’ve shot… the huge musical numbers I’ve shot… this was a rare moment where an actor felt the humiliation of the scene instead of experiencing my humiliation. ‘How many would you like to have?’ The anger was on both sides, but you have to be in that frame of mind because it won’t show up in your face until then. Another actor might have stormed off the set, but both Richa and I understand that the shot is more important, the song is more important, the scene is more important and the show is more important than you and me.”
The filmmaker revealed that after Richa Chadha delivered a brilliant shot, the entire unit erupted in cheers for her.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “When she did it, I stood up, the whole unit clapped, I went and hugged her and we forgot everything that happened before the shot. But sometimes, you have to come to that moment. An actor must be ready to arrive at that moment. The director has to stop and bring the actor to that moment. If you were taking too many takes and I scolded you, you would feel insulted that the character wanted to show. When I was watching it, I thought, ‘She’s really crying. In fact she is very upset.’ She held every beat. It was a very complicated shot. Lots of moves and shots. She didn’t let go of that anger and frustration until the last moment. I went to her after the shot. I said, ‘I’m sorry if I told you something. She said, ‘I’m sorry if I did anything to you.’ So that moment was waiting to happen.”
