2002 movie Devdas, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s best film of all time, retains a special place in the hearts of the audience. Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit acted brilliantly in this movie. Now in a new interview Dr Bollywood Hungama, the director opened up about the excellent performances given by the actors in that film and how such acting techniques can be a challenge for today’s actors. During the interview, the director was asked about his thoughts on the evolving acting process over the years, he said, “I think cinema has changed, the technique has changed. Now a director looks at cinema from a different perspective. Screenwriters are writing differently and portraying different and unusual roles. These are great times for Indian cinema. Today, great films are being made and amazing work is being done.”

He added, “The sur (tone) and the note on which Devdas was being performed, it was high pitched and operatic… it was difficult to perform. Back then, directors demanded actors to be like that, but today they ask actors to underplay and that’s cool too. What did Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit and Kiran Kher do? DevdasThere are notes and tunes that today’s actors might not be able to deliver because they were a bit surreal and demanded a deep understanding of acting technique which Shah Rukh handled brilliantly.”

Devdas Based on Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s 1917 novel of the same name.

After the resounding success of HiramandiThe director is now gearing up for the shooting of his next film love and war, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal in lead roles. The film is slated to release in December 2025.
